[kj] OT - MJ Conclusion

Mr. Peace: Interesting story. I can imagine that must have been difficult for you. Having covered an awful lot of court cases as a newspaper reporter (hence my never being able to serve on a jury), I always felt for those on a jury having to decide on a case -- and yes, some of the defendants were descipable thugs who deserved the book thrown at them, so to speak. In other cases, the evidence was not clear-cut.
At any rate, hope those bastards in the Gloucester case are still rotting in a cell.

Quite so. I served as a juror in Gloucester, in the mid Nineties. It was a really nasty case (gang rape and attempted murder). Constantly reminding ourselves of the need to apply ourselves only to the evidence, and not even the demeanour of the accused (they were grinning and laughing as the victim gave her evidence) could be considered, was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do. It was only when we returned a guilty verdict (on the evidence put before us) that we discovered the splendid fellows in the dock had a history of sexual violence, and similar crimes.

Yuck.

From what I gather, as soon as Stephen sniffed any doubt he made his mind up, that's how I read it at least. The whole question is was it reasonable doubt. And I'm aware of the distinction between civil and criminal weight of evidence, however as with any case, it always comes down to evidence (or should) at the end of the day.

I'd move to have you all dismissed from the case if you made up your mind at the first sign of doubt.
