[kj] the mind lives on or.....

Tell me what you think about the doctrine of non-resistance to evil, which
is one of the principles of Buddhism?

My opinion is that it’s one of the best ways to ensure the supremacy of evil
and has the opposite effect to that intended, in that if followed
wholeheartedly by a large enough percentage of any given intelligent race,
dooms that race to never reach the Buddhist goals of enlightenment, or
anything close to it. This is assuming that all life in the universe, if
there is any outside the planet, is in conflict and competition. Otherwise
the doctrine would make perfect logical and ethical sense, however for us, I
can’t see how it does.

I’m not sure if it’s the natural consequence of a belief in the afterlife
and the supernatural, because I can imagine a belief system that
incorporates both of the above but doesn’t espouse non-resistance to evil.

I can’t really figure out how those Buddhist monks, with a combined uptime
of several million hours of meditation into the meaning of life, actions and
their consequences etc, came to such a conclusion, which has actually been
put into practice and is surely responsible for thousands to millions of
deaths?

I would question everything else they have to say, until I can reconcile
this part of their belief system. Which I’m perfectly open to doing, if such
an explanation exists.

Excellently put! That pretty much sums up how I feel about this now. Shit
man, I couldn't

even FORCE myself to believe in that christian bullshit when I was a kid -
faith has to

come naturally. Deluding oneself is extremely hard work, as you say, unless
it's

applied in extremis.

However, no matter how much of a skeptic I am about these things, it doesn't
mean I

don't find them IMMENSELY interesting! History can help us, if we bother to
study it.

Buddhism seems to transcend everything - it seems 'modern' when it comes to
how we

think. Very impressive.

Lol! that one's gold.

No one's ever proven any 'afterlife' and as time goes on psychological
analyses more

and more disprove any given story of 'transcendence,'etc. and the faith
people put in these

things.

I don't think we're that special; but we are special (because my mother
told me so).

I think if we stop making excuses and rationalizations we'd appreciate Life
and the

Living and won't wait until crisis to appreciate and love others, cuz once
you're dead -

there is no getting anything back.

Except of course in someone else's afterlife - where everybody is an
emperor,

mercenary head captain of a regiment of errant condottieri, royal vizier for
Tamerlane

or head courtesan to the Peacock Throne.

(how come no one's ever a simple bricklayer, Eskimo chimney-sweep or
precolombian

rebel slacker first-born son in a peasant Mayan's home, Roman bathhouse
janitor or

anonymous papermonger in Africa chillin' on the streets with Prester John?)

I've read some books and scientific online forums that are finding more
and more messianic delusions (Mohammed, Saul/Paul of Tarsus, etc.) to be
temporal lobe

epileptic seizures and visions of divine apparitions and interventions
(medieval Sister

Katherine's visions are one example) are the result of someone being
molested by

some abuser, violent assault, or being an abandoned toddler for an entire
weekend

in a granary basement with a hostile rooster, whatever...

But...whatever gets ya thru the night... 's alright.

I'm all for defense mechanisms as a short-term fix. Like in my old n'hood
if i was

if ever in possible danger i'd start to believe I actually cannot be killed,
even ended up

'calculating' (given the caliber of gun you hear being fired) that i could
take 1 maybe 2

rounds of a smaller caliber round - but nothing at all can actually kill me,
or so i would

think.

Would get me thru the tough spots but it's not something i would go
preaching

to others as being the gospel truth because even when I was actually
deluding myself

i still couldn't buy half my own bullshit.

"O how ingenious the centuries of Lies...."

... ... ... ... ... ...
(looking at the current state of things)

'Save me..

save me from Tomorrow..
I don't want to sail in this Ship Of Fools...!'

My view? Whew! Don't start me!

It would be nice to think that souls go on, but I wonder if it's just
wishful thinking. I mean,

the human animal certainly thinks a lot of itself. We're *special*
apparently. You only have

to look at the behaviour of apes, etc, to see that's not entirely true...
