Yowza! You know times are tough when you have to resort to a Beaver Brown quote.

I know what you mean about benefits. While Boeing has a great benefits package that's due to it's size and years of hard fought battles by our unions. Most work you'd find in the tech writing field probably would not. And when you have two young children that's an important consideration. Good luck with your search. Considering how long you've been looking you're due to make the right connections soon.

I have zero mechanical/electrical/computer science knowledge. Moreover, such a gig probably wouldn't give me the benefits I need, nor would it pay nearly enough to sustain living in Manhattan, but thanks for thinking of me.

I'm considering "plan b" options (going into PR or advertising copywriting), but to quote John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band, "things are tough all over."

Something will fall into place -- it has to, but it's simply not transpiring as swiftly as I'd like it to.

I don't post often enough for folks to get to know me, but I'll share a little personal info now. I don't want to sound braggadocious or insensitive, especially considering that it appears several members of the list are seeking employment in a field that makes use of their writing skills.

I'm an internationally published author. My work is translated into several languages including Japanese and Arabic. The popularity of my work is such that its reprinted three or four times a year. In fact I've got people clamoring for my new upcoming release.

So subtract the obvious cocktail party pickup line content. In real terms I'm a technical writer for that big airplane company in Seattle. I write the aircraft maintenance and repair manuals. Yes, it pays reasonably well depending on your industry, region, experience etc. You won't get rich, but you'll be able to keep yourself and loved ones housed, clothed and well fed. While it's not creative work it's usually interesting. So yeah I'd recommend it Brendan. Alex, I have no idea what your mechanical/electrical/computer science knowledge is, but it would pay the bills until something better comes along.

the general level of online journalism isn’t that crash hot. Suppose to some extent the driver is time to print and sheer output, not accuracy
but sometimes it gets pretty awful.

I was actually looking into technical writing a while ago, most of my friends looked at me as though I was insane when I mentioned it, dunno
I kinda like pulling apart complex systems and describing them in a way anyone can understand (even to the extent of having to prise information from the pudgy fingers of the systems administrators), so I figured why not. I hear it pays well to very well
and doesn’t seem to be one of those flooded career niches. Personally I like the idea of a job where I can work at my own pace, I’m not bugged by a boss or users all the time, etc
(okay, I like the idea of being able to email and surf when I should be working
I said it.)

There’s probably quite a few angles you can take with good writing skills
on top of your other abilities.

Script writing even? Couldn’t be too hard to thrash out some of the pap that comes on telly
whether you’re willing to sell your soul or not is the question I suppose.

Alrighty then -- some other news:

1. I endured a bit of "Ear Candling" today. This involved someone sticking a lit candle literally into my head in strictly non-sexual manner. Those curious should click here:

http://vassifer.blogs.com/alexinnyc/2008/02/stick-it-in-you.html

2. I had drinks with Tod [A] of Firewater/Cop $hoot Cop recently. He was briefly in town after bouncing around Turkey and Bali for the last several months. Firewater's forthcoming album, THE GOLDEN HOUR is a fucking stomper. Moreover, there is still talk of re-mastering and re-releasing the Cop Shoot Cop back catalog in much the same manner as the KJ catalog. Fingers crossed that that's going to happen.

3. I still have no job.
