[kj] OT: Other News

You’re a successful author…you go by the nick Culturevirus…okay, you’re
James Frey ;)

Cheers for the advice…at the moment the job situation in NZ is really good,
which is a nice change. Unemployment is down to 3.4%, one of the lowest in
the world, which has pushed up wages in some fields. I’m making hay while
the sun shines, as an IT contractor. But in all of my contracts I document
the technical environment, if it’s not done already. I quite enjoy it and it
always gets me good press when I do it.

So I can imagine myself doing it for a living…in the meantime I’ll probably
try to get back into contracting in the banking industry if I can, hope we
don’t hit a worldwide recession… :-)

I don't post often enough for folks to get to know me, but I'll share a
little personal info now. I don't want to sound braggadocious or
insensitive, especially considering that it appears several members of the
list are seeking employment in a field that makes use of their writing
skills.

I'm an internationally published author. My work is translated into several
languages including Japanese and Arabic. The popularity of my work is such
that its reprinted three or four times a year. In fact I've got people
clamoring for my new upcoming release.

So subtract the obvious cocktail party pickup line content. In real terms
I'm a technical writer for that big airplane company in Seattle. I write the
aircraft maintenance and repair manuals. Yes, it pays reasonably well
depending on your industry, region, experience etc. You won't get rich, but
you'll be able to keep yourself and loved ones housed, clothed and well fed.
While it's not creative work it's usually interesting. So yeah I'd recommend
it Brendan. Alex, I have no idea what your mechanical/electrical/computer
science knowledge is, but it would pay the bills until something better
comes along.

I am culturevirus (and your life is in my hands every time you fly)

Hey Alex are you applying for all sorts of journo stuff, as opposed to just
the music industry? You write betterer than the vast majority of online
writers…the general level of online journalism isn’t that crash hot. Suppose
to some extent the driver is time to print and sheer output, not
accuracy…but sometimes it gets pretty awful.

I was actually looking into technical writing a while ago, most of my
friends looked at me as though I was insane when I mentioned it, dunno…I
kinda like pulling apart complex systems and describing them in a way anyone
can understand (even to the extent of having to prise information from the
pudgy fingers of the systems administrators), so I figured why not. I hear
it pays well to very well…and doesn’t seem to be one of those flooded career
niches. Personally I like the idea of a job where I can work at my own pace,
I’m not bugged by a boss or users all the time, etc…(okay, I like the idea
of being able to email and surf when I should be working…I said it.)

There’s probably quite a few angles you can take with good writing skills…on
top of your other abilities.

Script writing even? Couldn’t be too hard to thrash out some of the pap that
comes on telly…whether you’re willing to sell your soul or not is the
question I suppose.

Alrighty then -- some other news:

1. I endured a bit of "Ear Candling" today. This involved someone sticking a
lit candle literally into my head in strictly non-sexual manner. Those
curious should click here:

2. I had drinks with Tod [A] of Firewater/Cop $hoot Cop recently. He was
briefly in town after bouncing around Turkey and Bali for the last several
months. Firewater's forthcoming album, THE GOLDEN HOUR is a fucking stomper.
Moreover, there is still talk of re-mastering and re-releasing the Cop Shoot
Cop back catalog in much the same manner as the KJ catalog. Fingers crossed
that that's going to happen.

3. I still have no job.

Alex in NYC
