They are very likely psychopaths or psychotics, I'd say the former. They
don't necessarily need to have anything negative in their upbringing to
'create' the monsters within...there's plenty of cases of psychopaths that
don't make any sense based on their upbringing. I don't know how they were
raised, but I do know that you don't necessarily need to blame anyone
else...either case is a possibiliy anyway.

And if they are, there's nothing in any real sense that you can do to
treat psychopathy. Psychotics can be drugged into submission (anti
psychotic drugs), but there is no effective treatment for psychopathy.
Their behaviour can theoretically be moderated, especially later in life,
but I'm pretty dubious. You can 'tame' wild animals, or think you have,
but then you have 'instinctual drift', where they revert back to their
instincts, and you end up with shredded lion tamers and videos of people
being mauled by 'cute' bears on telly.

iPat is right, I remember kids in the neighbourood or at school that were
just cold evil fuckers. Predators. Everything they did was all about
ganging up on kids they didn't like and manipulating the kids who were too
big to bully...and I mean that was all they were about...you never saw
them acting like normal kids or ever expressing any emotions other than
being fucked off, angry, broding, or laughing at the kids they were
fucking with. I remember one who chloroformed a cat for a laugh and told
all the kids in the neighbourhood...the traits often start expressing
themselves pretty early, in antisocial behaviour, torturing animals and
cruelty to siblings is common.

Reading 'Withoout Conscience' by Richard Hare, pretty must the top expert
on the topic, was a real eye opener...there's a certain percentage,
something around 1-4% of the population that are psychos. There's no
treatment that really works, they are different biologically. Unclear
still at this stage how and why they come about, because they do appear to
be a product of their upbringing in some cases, in others not at all.

So...when I hear the Dalai Lama go on about how everyone is the same
inside etc, I bear this in mind...we're just not, and making that mistake
with some people is a disaster. I might be wrong on this, but I'm pretty
sure Buddhism is responsible for thousands of cambodians under Pol Pot
allowing themselves to be killed because they didn't want to take any
negative feelings about their oppressors into the next life...fuck that.
