[kj] Off Topic : I-Movie help!

After my success in using the list for help with Our Friends In The North 
(thanks Matt!) I'm hoping for some help with something else!

A friend is wanting me to send down some footage of his band so he can edit 
a montage type thing using I-Movie (AppleMac based I do believe!).   My 
original stuff is on video tape, but I can record it onto DVD.   What then 
is the easiest way to get it into a format he'll be able to use with 
I-Movie?  Is there an ideally FREE programme I can use to take it off a DVD 
and turn into a file that works with I-Movie???        It's already driven 
me mad this afternoon, so a pointer in the right direction would be much 
appreciated...
