Ah, ok -- assuming the gentler overload of a tube power amp, and not to
the point of clipping.  That gives the impression of more loudness, due to
added harmonics, a lot like what happens with a real-life trumpet etc. as
you play it more loudly.  Not only does the trumpet get louder, but it
gets brighter.  When you hear the same phenomenon from of an amp and
speaker, you get the impression of more dynamics than are actually there.
