坂石千鶴子さんに強制収容での経験を語って頂きます。セミナーは日本語で行われ、
日本語堪能である坂石さんとのインタビューの後、参加者の方々との質疑応答、会話
の時間を予定しています。

坂石千鶴子さんは１９２２年、カリフォルニア州、アーバーン市（Auburn）生まれ。
千鶴子さんの実母は、千鶴子さんが５歳の時に亡くなられた。千鶴子 さんは、その
後、８歳になるまでカリフォルニア州、ルーミス（Loomis, California）にある小学
校に通われ、その後、広島に渡り、祖父母に育てられる。
１９４１年６月、千鶴子さんは１９歳の時にアメリカに帰国され、彼女の実の父親と
継母の家族と住み始めた。そして真珠湾攻撃直後、家族全員は米国政府から 立ち退
きを命じられ、１９４２年４月にカリフォルニア州アーボガ（Arboga, California）
にある収容所に１、２ヶ月間強制収容されたあと、ツール湖（鶴領湖、Tule Lake）
収容所に送り込まれた。
ツール湖収容所は、日本育ちの日本人や、いわゆる「ノー・ノーボーイ」と呼ばれ
る、日系アメリカ人社会で問題ありとされた人々が送り込まれていた収容所 だっ
た。２年前に不動産やその他の個人資産を全てアメリカ政府に没収されているにもか
かわらず、「アメリカ政府の軍人として戦うか」、「天皇への忠誠を放 棄する
か」、という質問に拒んだ人たちが拘留された収容所だった。
１９４３年、ツール湖収容中に、千鶴子さんは、坂石勲（いさお）さんと出合う。功
さんも、千鶴子さん同様、帰米2世（日本育ちの日系アメリカ人）であっ た。その
後、二人は収容所で結婚され、千鶴子さんは、収容所内で女の子を２人を出産され
た。
１９４６年２月、２人目が誕生した後、坂石さん一家は収容所から開放され、カリ
フォルニア州、グアダルーペ（Guadalupe, California）に向かい、そこのサザンパ
シフィック鉄道で勤められ、その後、プラッサー・カウンティ（Placer County）に
住み着かれた。
現在、坂石さんは未亡人で、４人の娘さんとサクラメント(Sacramento)とその近郊に
て在住。セミナーは日本語で行われ、日本語堪能である坂石さんとのインタビューの
後、参加者の方々との質疑応答、会話の時間を予定しています。

Ms. Chizuko Sakaishi is 87 years old and was born in Auburn, California in
1922. Her mother died when Chizuko was 5 years old. She went to grade school
in Loomis, California, until she was 8 years old, and then went to
Hiroshima, Japan, to be raised by her grandparents. At age 19 in June of
1941, she returned to the U.S. to live with her father and her stepmother
and family. After the attack of Pearl Harbor, the family was uprooted and
sent to Arboga, CA, a segregation holding camp for one to two months in
April 1942 and then sent to Tule Lake Segregation Center. In 1943, while at
Tule Lake, she married her husband Mr. Isao Sakaishi, who was also a Kibei
(Japanese-American persons who were raised in Japan), and gave birth to two
daughters in camp. Tule Lake Segregation Center was often where the
“troublemakers” (the “No-No” boys) were detained. They were called that
by other Japanese-Americans for not agreeing to abdicate loyalty to the
Japanese Emperor, or serve in the U.S. military after all of their
belongings (including pets), real estate holdings, and investments had been
confiscated by the U.S Government two years before. After the birth of their
second daughter, the family was released in February of 1946, and went to
Guadalupe, CA, for work with the Southern Pacific Railroad. Eventually, in
June of 1946, the family settled in Placer County. Ms. Sakaishi, a widow,
presently lives in Sacramento, California, and has four daughters living in
Sacramento and the outlying areas. The seminar will be a conversation (in
Japanese) between Ms. Sakaishi, the moderator, and the audience.
