The Olympic Stadium is well worth a visit. The stadium itself is mightily impressive but go to the Bell Tower behind the stadium, watch the free film on the ground floor, take the lift to the top of the tower for the view and then descend to the Langmarckhalle on the first floor. It was in this imposing room, as the crowds in the stadium and the world at large awaited the opening ceremony of the Olympics in 1936, that Hitler and an elite guard of the SS performed a secret ritual invoking the spirits of a poorly equipped reserve army of students, teachers and university lecturers who were massacred in a first world war battle at Langmarck in Belgium and pledging revenge for Langmarck and the destruction of all their enemies in a new world war. A matter of hours later, white doves were released into the stadium as a symbol of the "Games of Peace". The stadium and tower are one of the very few remaining examples of Third Reich architecture. The hall is one of the eeriest places I've ever been. You can hear the ghostly echo of jackboots on the stone floor. Summary executions took place regularly in the woods surrounding the tower. Visit in daylight! http://www.atlantic-times.com/archive_detail.php?recordID=603 http://www.thirdreichruins.com/olympic.htm
