[kj] Track-by-track: Killing Joke's Jaz Coleman talks MMXII

I agree, Paul.  Well said.  That's how I enjoy the songs as well.  The music and themes speak to a part of me that is that is not rational, that is more primal.  A part which has a nagging suspicion that all is not well in the world and in myself.  I liked what Jaz said in a recent interview about learning to recognize or confront your own dark side or "shadow self".  I feel that their music helps me to do that in some ways.  It's like shining a light on the dark places within myself, forcing me to acknowledge that those feelings (fear, paranoia, frustration, anger) exist within me, and, on some level, I feel this allows me to consider those feelings and be more mindful of them...  rather than to just get lost by reveling in them.  This nastiness exists within myself and, I presume, within the majority of the population.  If we are to overcome it, we must first recognize it.  No way out but forward go!!  If you suffer from the
underworld, the only cure can be found in the underworld.....underworld...  :)))))

I had a tasty little journey into paranoia as I listened to the album for the first time the other night.  As the first notes of Pole Shift oozed into my ear cavities from the headphones I was wearing, I looked down on the dusk covered Manhattan sidewalk that I strode upon to see.....a red laser light dancing at my feet!  My mind raced!  Was I being targeted by a psychopath with a gun?!  Was the prying government somehow aware that I was listening to the anti-establishment views of these British gadflies and marking me with new technology for tracking purposes?!?  Was it that odd, grey, Jetsons style hovering trash compactor, on the cover of the new album, floating in the stratosphere, making it's presence known and communicating that I was known....and being watched??!!??   Or was it a stupid kid with a laser pointer?  I didn't know but I watched as my mind wandered and went to ridiculous places and considered irrational
possibilities....  I suspect that Jaz and the boys allow their minds to do the same when they write their lyrics.  Well, whatever it was, I survived the nefarious laser of doom and was granted the perfect emotional atmosphere within which to hear this massive work of art while trodding through the dark streets of the grand metropolis called New York City in the year 2012.

Killing Joke, I love you!!!

:))))))

I view songs like 'Fema Camp' as dystopian visions rather than
reality. That may not be how Jaz indends them but it's the only way I
can "enjoy" them. Jaz believes what he wants to sometimes. I used to
wonder why his interviews were so barking when his lyrics seemed so
profound, now there isn't such a gulf between the two. He predicts the
end of the world as often as he predicts next year will be the Year of
the Joke. Neither ever happens. An asteroid probably won't wipe us
out. The poles probably won't shift. 2012 will go and 2013 will come.
But it's a mad world and KJ do capture that better than any other band
and I'm very grateful for that cathartic release. Some of his ideas a
quite interesting too. There are usually a few gems amid the rubbish.
