[kj] MMXII first listen from Detroit

I got it yesterday and wanted to wait until I was in front of my stereo.

First thing is that this seems to be the best "leak" yet. As far as quality.

While I applaud those that choose to wait. The "glory days" of walking into a store the day comes out seems to be far gone. Unless it is a major release and can be obtained at a mega-chain store.
I cannot even remember the last KJ record I was able to buy in the store the day "it came out". Maybe the reissues but thats because they had a major behind it. I think I had to wait for Pandemonium onward.

So far it's not grabbing me. The songs are ok but AD grabbed me right away. Maybe it was the anticipation. But I want to say that they broadened their writing without being to jarring (like 2003). Yes this one is more consistent but a lot of it seems like leftovers from other releases.
And in general the keyboards are waaaaayyyyyyy to obvious and a bit cliched. KJ have usually been good at coming up with good runs. That was one of my major gripes with Hossannass were the keyboards and length of songs

1. Poleshift - This may be the weakest one and either way I am confused about it being the opener. First songs don't have to be ball busters but they need to grab you and this simply didn't

2. Fema Camp - - Yes this sounds like a rehash or along the same line s as Pandemonium or Democracy. But that's not necessarily a bad
thing. I almost think this should have been the opener or at least move
so it's not sucked up by the blahness of Poleshift

3. Rapture - I'm digging this one from the get go. I like Geordies work but it is buried. While the keyboards are better here they are way to overpowering. But KJ have done that before.

4. Colony Collapse - I'm liking this too. Geordie doing what he does. The song structure has been done before by KJ but hey what can you do. And it's subtle but you can make out some Big Paul goodness.

5. Corporate Elect - hmm. A rocker. Like cock rocker. Not sure. Come back to me on this one. I think I like it.

6. In Cythera - Album highlight. It's good to know that they can still write great songs and they don't have to influence all the god awful metal bands in the future. This is why it's great that the original boys are back together.

7. Primobile - hmmmmmmmmmm. Bit nervous to judge. There seems to be Big Paul shining more as far as playing. But the keyboards are way to cliched. Bells? I can maybe see it growing on me. But I can also see myself skipping this all together. There is more to the songwriting structure. Maybe this shouldn't be behind In Cythera.

8. Glitch - fuck yeah all around. I leave it at that.

9. Trance - Interesting. Reminds me of the better parts of Hossannas. Then it gets to the verse. I give them credit for trying something but it just isn't coming together. Is it whiney nu-metal/emo with What's this For era dub bass lines? Hmmmm.

10. All Hallows Eve - It's okay. I like what the drums are doing. It's not the strongest. Not the weakest. At first listen I was turned off by the keyboards. But it works in later.

Over all I like AD better. This does seem like a bit of Democracy-esque. More mellow, melancholy. Which does this also mean that the end is near? I do hope I get to hear it live. As I was surprised at how some of AD translated live. The songs aren't to long or short which has been some of my complaints prior to AD. I don't know if that is coincidence, or Youth (even though some of Pandemonium wen to long) or Big Paul or what.

There are a few things that are important about this release
1. it's Killing Joke
2. It's Killing Joke with the original lineup
3. That means Big Paul Fergusson
4. Mike Coles. I cannot wait to see the innards.

Glad I got a listen. It iwll not tarnish my excitement when I finally get the important version in the mail.

Agreed. The songs I'm not so keen on, I can still happily listen to the drumming...

I think the drumming on this album is superb. AD sounded like Jams (which they were) so had no time to develop.
This is different. He's bang on. Drumming better than ever.
