[kj] Gathering Digest, Vol 99, Issue 12

Huh... I find it really fucking ironic that everyone who communicates on
this Gathering list, probably uses an interface and OS most that most likely
had been developed by Microsoft and / or Apple, but I see Gates and Jobs
being dissed...??? That’s fucked up.... I have respect for both!

I think this was mentioned here when it was at the IWM in Manchester.
Here's a link to a slide show with audio interview with McCullin:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_8492000/8492777.stm

...anyway, I was in Waterloo station the other day, and what should greet me
on a huge screen above the train info but this picture:

http://london.iwm.org.uk/server/show/nav.24681

Aside from the obvious KJ link, McCullin's a thoughtful chap, and an amazing
photographer, so I highly recommend a visit.

This photo looks like Killing Joke on stage playing to an audience of young
boys, who run away.

Can someone actually articulate what Jobs is supposed to have done that's
worthy of adulation? I read that someone just compared him to Edison and
Einstein? WTF?

I don't see him donating most of his time and money to charity like Gates
(who has drummed up several tens of billions more cash from other rich ppl),
I do see Apple using Chinese slave labour in conditions so onerous that they
have to install anti-suicide nets.

Xerox Parc invented the GUI / mouse, M$ and Apple both ripped it off, for
some reason Jobs was indignant that M$ used it too, like he'd actually
invented it.

Could he code, or design computers? I don't think so, Wozniak did the brain
work didn't he? Compared to Bill Gates who was a child prodigy and the chief
of technology at M$...

Personality...he got kicked out of Apple because he alienated everyone by
being a prick from what I understand.

I really don't get the Apple cult.

Thank for posting Brendan. As far as I'm concerned, the loss of a
labor-exploiting capitalist is
a victory for the rest of us, no matter how many useless gadgets he claims
to have put out.
(and I personally think people would be better off not walking around
looking at little screens
all day, but that's just my opinion).
As for Gates, he is one of the main assholes advocating for attacks on US
public schools--
ending teachers unions, bringing in more "charter" schools, more testing,
etc. If he was
such a do-gooder he wouldn't be trying to take away education from lower
income folks. I've also
read that the "charity" he's involved in causes more harm than good in other
ways too.
