i was a big fan of KJ2003 too, amidst a lot of loathing among Gatherers. could there be a link between our appreciation of both records?

Extremities is fantastic. Certainly the fast part in the Beautiful Dead and parts like it have that Ministry "Mind is a Terrible Thing" vibe and sound dated as hell now but I think it was just a matter of them trying to "keep up with the joneses". Trying to stay relevent to the kids while still retaining their own unique sound. I think it's a nice blend and I love that they attempted it. I don't think it's the first time they deviated from their standard sound and tried to take on different contemporary styles. Pretty much everything from Nighttime and on sees them melding their style to what was current at the time. The idea of Killing Joke absorbing the musical climate at any given time, putting it through their own filter and spitting it back out is one that I'm totally into. I'll take that from most bands, actually. Pandemonium and Democracy both have standout tracks but are also lousy with filler. Extremities
is a much more solid album. I think it's the last really relevent thing they did, although KJ2003 comes close.

i think extremities is one of the most complete and perfect things they ever did, the recording style merely reaffirmed the "punk" in their post-punk pedigree.

I found DMCRCY was a welcome tack in a lighter direction after the intensity
of the "Extremities.. - L?IMBO - Pandemonium" sequence.

I think Jaz is the Pink Floyd fan of the group.

Yeah I know its a lazy phrase... I'm listening to Extremities now and I chiefly meant
the fast section slapped into the middle of Beautiful Dead for absolutely no reason that ruins what would
have been a fantastic song, the horrible mess that is Struggle and sections of the title track.

But Geordie's guitar sounds fucking incredible - was this the last time that sound we all
know and love was in evidence on a KJ record?

Sorry Jel, no more analysis, promise

"bad thrash metal stuff on Extremities"

This has been levelled at Extremeties in the past and to be honest I cant see it? May be as I don't listen to a lot of thrash metal.

Following Jon's footy analogy, it's 4-2 to Extremeties for me with a Geordie hat-trick.

Brian.

Well I think both albums are games of two halves, Alan

Always hated the bad thrash metal stuff on Extremities but some of the guitar
work still stands as some of Geordie's finest - and Termite Mound is always in
my KJ top ten. Except that Termite Mound was very unrepresentative of the
whole LP - wish it was more like this. I just don't think KJ do fast very well,
and are far more menacing when they slow it down

Where as Pandemonium had some filler, agreed, but the good stuff was
great - and I include Communion, the title track, Black Moon and the original mixes of
Millennium and Mathematics (cheating I know, but...)

And I like Jana.

It goes to penalties, and Pandemonium wins.

Still getting me coat, Jamie hold the bus

Extremities wasn't ruined.

Extremities wins on the away goals rule.

Extremities may be a better album--certainly more original, and no real weak songs--but Pandemonium is better to just sit there and rock out to!

Quite right.

Looks likes its boys one side of the room and girls the other then!

So that's it, if you prefer Pandemonium to Extremities, you are a girl. Period.

PANDEMONIUM has more filler than EXTREMITIES.

I don’t mind it but Pandy pisses all over it. Ade agrees with me.

I never really liked Extremities.
Too thrashy. I give Termite Mound and North of the Border a blast
now and again.

I'll get me coat

Been a while since I gave this a listen and was blown away by just how good this one really is.

I remember the sense of anticipation when this one came out after the way that OTG was perceived.

This ticked all the boxes at the time.

Kind of feel the same about the new one!
