Greetings All,
Raven told me that Grohl took at least 2 passes on the drums on each track, 1 one pass for the Kick, Snare and Cymbals and another seperate pass for the Tom work and other fills.Which accounts for the "impossible to play live" (without a 3rd and 4th arm) aspect.

Ok,
Here is how I hear it.   The drums were recorded last.     Dave Grohl basicly overdubbed drums on top of all ready existing drum machine parts.   For the most part, the record sounds like a blend of real drums and programmed drums.

In particular, the hi-hat sound on the tracks still  sounds like a drum machine, as it is very precise and persistent.  The drum part on Seeing Red is pretty much impossible to play live, as most would probably agree that the live performance of this song sounded kind of messy compared to the original.   Kind of a shame, as it is such a cool track.

As far as the "hollow" sound you refer to,   to me it just sounds like the whole thing was recorded on a laptop.   Too much digital recording without enough analog  to balance it off.   Also, I read an interview with Andy Gill where he said there was one maybe two finished songs ready to go when they started recording.  They would have had to be real careful about running up a huge recording tab because of writing in the studio, which is where digital recording can really save the day.  Do a lot of work on the computer outside the studio to get arrangements together, then go to the studio when things needed to be recorded.

   Anyway, that's how I see it.   - Carl P.

I think the whole 2003 album has too much of a "spread out" sound. It sounds a bit hollow even though it's also heavy and loud. Sort of hard to explain...

Question: Are a lot of the drums on the 2003 album over dubs?

I was driving around to Seeing Red, and the snares seemed really 'abstract' to the mix in parts.
