Subject: [kj] Montreal gig

Just got home from the Montreal show. My first time seeing the band. It was pretty awesome, very weird, a little shambolic, but great fun overall. Early on into the proceedings, I got the impression that this was not what the band were going to chalk up to as an exceptional gig. Not that they were just going through the motions but it was pretty obvious that they were nowhere near the "white heat". Anyways, things started off with Tomorrow's World then right into Change and everything was awesome, Change in particular being a sweet version with a wonderful middle section. Then things got weird. Jaz calls for In Excelsis and the band dive into Wardance, leaving Jaz looking very confused. And that's pretty much the way the gig went from there, more or less. Whenever a song would end, the band would look down at the setlist in complete and utter confusion. Eventually, a song would start and at least one member of the band would look completely thrown for a loop. So fucking weird. Things did eventually gel though. The band didn't really start to find its momentum until Fall of Because. Things really kicked into high gear for the band and the crowd when all the faster songs got played, back to back. Asteroid, The Great Cull, Wardance, Psyyche. Like I said, it wasn't a gig of epic preportions by any stretch, but you could tell they were at least enjoying themselves, particularly Geordie who grinned pretty much the whole time. Lots of interaction between Youth and him. It felt, at times, almost like watching a rehearsal than a concert, especially when Primitive (1st encore song) totally trainwrecked at the end.

That's about it. Kind of a weird first KJ gig for me but, at the same time, very cool to see them so loose and having fun. Oh, and I saw Away from Voivod standing around after the show so I went and told him how his band changed my life and stuff. He was so cool about it. That was a nice way to end the night.
