It was feckin amazing.

At that point (Sept 86 I think) I'd only heard one Big Black song, namely Kerosene, courtesy of John Peel.

I was upstairs at Hammy Palais, biding my time through the support acts. Back then, KJ support acts were uniformly forgettable, so I was expecting quite a tedious wait.

So imagine my surprise when several scrawny, tatty and very intense characters apppeared on stage, and blazed their way through a series of fantastically aggressive tracks. No one around me knew who they were - and nor did I, but I was very fuckin impressed. Then they played their last track, and it was Kerosene, and the penny dropped.

The Joke were incredible as well - the Brighter material really rocked live, and they were playing a blindingly fast version of Requiem on that tour.

I've seen some great support bands:

Lords of the New Church (supporting the Damned)

Play Dead (supporting Killing Joke)

Big Black (supporting Killing Joke)

...but I've also seen a lot of cack!

Listen to you lot! ;-)

There are some fucking great local bands here in the UK.

Problem is the default position from the fans is " it's not our band so......."

Some of the "local" Oxford bands did ok I guess. Radiohead......supergrass........watch out for little fish too.

When Kj supported joy Division they would have been seen as a bunch of no hopers by some.

Go to the gig. Have a beer. Open your ears and shut the fuck up....;-)

Chances are, yes, they will all be godawful. All local bands being picked by the local promoters. Guarantee KJ are not hand-picking these bands. If they have any sense at all, they'll be comfortable on their bus or in the backstage area while the local yokels bore us all to tears. I swear to god, I've spent more time in my life waiting for bands to stop playing than anything else.

US openers are all locals. Interesting the label didn't send anyone, but that costs money. =
