[kj] OT: The Damned

I remember during my freshman year of college getting into a spanish
inquisition-styled argument wherein I had to defend "punk rock" to a
room full of Allman Brothers/Grateful Dead fan classmates. Being
grossly outnumbered, I thought I'd simply let the music do the
talking, so I reached into my closet and pulled out my copy of THE
BEST OF THE DAMNED and dropped the needle on "Smash It Up," with an
emphatic "JUST SHUT UP AND LISTEN!"

They politely sat through the instrumental bit (Pt. 1), but when the
song kicked in in earnest, they all started laughing, got up and
derisively air-guitared and took the piss (as you Brits say). For some
reason, the excitement just didn't translate.

They couldn't wait back to their "Whipping Post" and "Casey Jones"
snooeze-a-thons.

Perhaps i should have chosen something off the first Damned record --
or something by a different band entirely -- but I thought the fact
that the Damned were actually fair accomplished musicians would buffer
my argument.

I still love the track, but I can't listen to "Smash It Up" without
thinking of that incident now.
