[kj] [OT] John Pilger: Obama and The Century of The Self

I'm not sure where the "conspiracy theorist" label would come from. Did Pilger say something that was untrue? I too, am interested what the critics have to say.

As I was researching the Obama brand and a friend suggested this 2002, 4 part BBC television program "The Century of The Self" by Adam Curtis. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0432232/

It has a lot of parallels to today (not a surprise of course, but always a reminder that history repeats itself and we humans have short memories) Brilliant stuff about public relations, crowd control, creating an emotional attachement to corporations via "reinforcing" that democracy IS capitalism and democracy cannot exist without capitalism... If anyone's interested I'm including a link to part 1 of 4

"This series is about how those in power have used Freud's theories to
try and control the dangerous crowd in an age of mass democracy." -
Adam Curtis

Honorary degrees are about popularity, not ability. He's received as much criticism as he has praise; his reputation and status are not universal, and he isn't quite so respected outside of his fanbase.

And Mr Waugh is correct; Pilger's style and content are just like he says. So much of his readership already knows what the point of any selected work is, and often look to his books or articles as confirmation, rather than enlightenment.

Variations of Chomsky's comment can be found uttered in schoolyards acorss the world, any day of the week. Anyone who criticizes Pilger's work is doing so because they're jealous and wish they could write that well. Genius. I hope Chomsky didn't win any awards for that old chestnut.

Jim.

Pilger has a ton of honourary degrees and awards for his investigative
journalism, if you read one of his books such as The New Rulers of the
World you'll see why. Highly recommended. His style does run to polemic,
but IMO it's hard not to when talking about cynical manipulators and power
mongers who use such eloquent and effective PR to cover up atrocities. I
think the same could be said for Noam Chomsky and Robert Fisk, who always
come to mind when I think of Pilger. i.e. the cream of the crop in that
field.

The wiki article on him has the following to say on that topic:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Pilger

The humorous writer Auberon Waugh, writing in The Spectator in the 1970s
in response to an article Pilger had written alleging Thai complicity in
child trafficking, coined the verb "to pilger", to present
information in
a sensationalist manner to reach a foregone conclusion

Noam Chomsky has expressed the view that pilger and pilgerise were
"invented by journalists furious about his incisive and courageous
reporting, and knowing that the only response they are capable of is
ridicule."[19]
