Love your list, Alex! But where is Big Paul? ; )
(At least hopefully, HIS breath was better than Grant Hart's)

"who was the most amicable "famous" peep that you approached?"

Okay, here we go:

- Michael Gira of SWANS/Angels of Light: Saw him -- Very randomly -- buying a suit in Brooks Brothers while wearing a big fuckoff cowboy hat. Introduced myself and he was incredibly cool.

- Mike Watt (Minutemen/fIREHOSE): He was dancing like a loon at a Blues Explosion show. Told him I was a big fan, and he was very chatty and all smiles.

- Grant Hart (Husker Du/Nova Mob): He was at House of Freaks show at Mercury Lounge. VERY chatty as well, but very bad breath.

- Bobby Steele of the Undead: He's a regular fixture in the East Village and always very happy to shoot the breeze.

- Iggy Pop: He was sitting in front of Sin-E on St. Marks (no long gone). I was walking by. I saw him and exclaimed: "Holy shit, that's Iggy!" He smiled goofily and gave me a thumbs-up. Very weird.

- Billy Ficca of Televsion: Saw him only a few weeks back having a smoke on St. Mark's Place. Very cool. We stopped and chatted and about five minutes. Very down to earth dude,...unlike:

- Tom Verlaine of Television: I see him all the time, but he is always a grouch.

- Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth: Approached him on the subway, and he was completely keen to talk about bands and new stuff he was listening to.

- Jon Spencer of Blues Explosion/Pussy Galore - He actually came up to ME after his son stepped on my daughter's toe by accident. Very nice guy. Wished me a "Merry Christmas" as well. Very odd.

- Johnny Ramone on MacDougal Street - he was kinda a dick, actually.

Well, I always have been a Joe Jackson fan, and was even going to pick up his autobiography. Now I have second thoughts. It sounds like he has some social phobia going, a vibe I always got from him. I know I would have been scared to approach him because of that.... I am sorry you had such a bad experience.

Just out of curiosity, Alex, who was the most amicable "famous" peep that you approached?
For me, it was Robyn Hitchcock, but it was after his concert, so that doesn't really count ;) He was very goofy and just passing through. I said the stupidest thing, of course, something like "my, you are much taller than I had thought" and he said "you are too, dear". LOL

I just read the blog and I don't think you did anything wrong. He can't be cool and just say "Thanks!"? Lame. You'd think after all these years he'd have settled into some kind of "stock-answer" routine with fans.

First time I saw Killing Joke: Summer of 1989 at the Cat Club (since torn down) on East 13th Street. Pre-EXTREMITIES. The flexi-disc of "Beautiful Dead" was out. Atkins on drums. Taif on bass. Not sure who was on keybs (Bechdel?). In the crowd: Joey Ramone of the Ramones, Johnny Feedback of KRAUT (local boys) and Handsome Dick Manitoba of the Dictators. And me --- practically welling up with joy.\
Incidentally, for those sitting on fence about picking up the new PEEL SESSIONS disc -- DO IT!! The last three tracks (a STOMPING, slower, more deliberate version of "Tension," a romp through "Exit" and THE BEST VERSION OF "UNSPEAKABLE" I'VE EVER HEARD (way better than studio rendition, in my opinion). ESSSSSSSENTIAL!!!!!!!
On other fronts:
I made a jackass of myself in front of New Wave's "Angry [old] Man," Joe Jackson. Read sad details here:

..and my blog-friend Jill just launched a Butthole Sufers site. Read about that here:

Hooray.

If i can make it this time it'll be my 2nd. The 1st was for KJ2003.
Sux i had just gotten back into KJ only 2 weeks or so after they
played L.A. (@ the Palace/Avalon) on their Pandemonium tour, which
I so much would've loved to have seen in this life.

Diaz is a KJ follower since many years (decades actually), and -just as me- this is the very first time he's going to a Killing Joke gig. I know most gatherers live in the US and the UK, therefore you have had a lot of chance to catch a KJ concert. Still, I wonder if other gatherer's are in the same situation than Diaz and me (going to see KJ for the first time ever)?

Anyone else joining the first-timers list?
