I'm not sure I would read it quite so seriously. Carpenter said it was his indignant protest against late 80s Repbulicanism, coupled with a degree of humour- I was several years before I realized that the alien on TV taking about 'a new optimism' was meant to be Ronnie Reagan...

"They Live" is one of the best MARXIST POLITICAL movies of all time--it is basically a symbolic (and tounge-in-cheek) look at how a revolutionary communist party would start to organize against capitalism (where the glasses represent the exposure of the crimes of capital (e.g., communist lit), and the glassy-eyed lady was a symbol for black (or other minority group) capitalists--a group that is exploited as a whole (humans by the aliens) where a few are allowed to rise up if they join in the exploitation (e.g., black administrators, police chiefs, CEOs, etc.). It's also funny, exciting, and suspensful!
