This is the geekiest thread in some time, thank you all. (Great to see Fripp fan gatherers.)

Moving in the direction of unconventional guitar . . .

Robin Guthrie has been mentioned enough, but I'll mention him again, and suggest you explore his solo work if you haven't, and also his collaborations with ambient legend Harold Budd.

For fans of the delay pedal, Lanterna, name for guitarist Henry Frayne, is an example of a genre called ambient-Americana. Great for driving in Autumn, if I may be so flakey. First album more ambient, and the two followups more "accessible". Surprised no tracks were ever grabbed for a car commercial.

And Jeff Pearce, in the ambient vein, though nakedly obvious he's playing a guitar, albeit drenched in layer upon layer of reverb.

Finally, I'll blow the whole thing up and mention my high school classic-rock geek hero Pete Townshend! Through who's fingers did run part of the roots of punk. (let the debate begin)
