Spot-on mate!

Seems there's a few old DC fans on the list... prefer Bon Scottt era myself. As for Fripp, I got into him
mainly through Crimson. I heard Peal play 'Red' & I thought it was someone ripping Geordie/KJ off, so I had
to hear more. Love 'Starless & Bible Black', 'Discipline', most Crimson really, other than 'Lizard'! Jesus, what
a fucking racket.

I forgot Robin Simon of Ultravox! & later Magazine. Fucking excellent. Oh shit, forgot Johnny Marr too.

I used to be very much into AC/DC during my younger days.

I'm not much into the Edge, mainly because a lot of what he does just doesn't seem particularly great. Some of his stuff sounds cool, but he's just never really got me interested in what he's doing. I'm also left a bit cold by Levene's guitar playing. There are times when he sounds fantastic, but I just can't get excited about what he's doing the rest of the time. He's never done it for me as much as McGeoch. I respect Levene and his influence, but definitely prefer McGeoch.

Robert Fripp is another one I'm kind of sitting on the fence about. I don't enjoy King Crimson that much, although there's some great stuff in the early-80s double trio format with Adrian Belew, Discipline and so forth. I think Fripp contributes some fantastic guitar to David Bowie's Scary Monsters- he turns the title track and Fashion into something amazing.

Yeah, mustardmit I'm not really into technical players. I was always influenced by people like Angus Young,
Hendrix & then onto Robert Smith, Danny Ash, Geordie, McGeoch, Levene, John McKay, Mr Edge, Barny Sumner,
Jon Klein, Jimmy Page, Robert Fripp, who I feel are all loose & inventive in their playing. There's some technical
players in there, but the 'otherness' is there enough to appeal.

I'm sure I've missed a few names!

When he was taking about Bauhaus, Killing Joke, the Cocteaus, Joy Division and the Cure, Navarro said he preferred guitarists who come up with their own 'soundscapes' rather than technical ones. He tied this in to Jimmy Page, saying he preferred it when Page created 'soundscapes' like No Quarter than when he wheeled out the blistering solos.I have to agree with him there, myself- it's fun to hear Steve Vai (or Dave Navarro!) going off on one periodically, but it's better to hear Daniel Ash or Geordie pulling out something non-technical but devastatingly effective with a few well-placed

Sorry, I forgot one- he also rates Robert Smith very highly too.

I reckon he's a bloody good guitarist too, whatever his tastes in makeup, wives and TV programs might be ;)

I have an excellent interview with him in a UK guitar magazine from a few years back. He briefly mentions Eddie Van Halen and Jimmy Page, but spends most of the interview talking about Joy Division, Robin Guthrie, Daniel Ash and Killing Joke, all of whom get enthused about greatly.

I used to have a bootleg of Jane's jamming through an impromptu version of 'Burning From The Inside', but it's long since disappeared, sadly.

Jim.
