[kj] Asteroid

If we're talking about technique alone, I'd say Benny was the best they ever had. He had all the seasoned chops of a really solid session man but (unlike Geoff Dugmore) he played the KJ material like a caveman and really injected some much needed life into the proceedings.

HOWEVER, if we're talking about a signature style, originality and the drum patterns that helped shape the sound of the band just as much as Geordie's guitar, well......yeah, Big Paul is THE indisputable best and really the only guy for the job. Surely, he's not the best drummer in the world, but the patterns he came up with were incredibly strange yet totally catchy. Nevermind the fact that he had quite a lot of lyrical and conceptual input as well. Killing Joke lost so much when he departed.

Cheers to the nth degree on your comments, Matthew! Paul is a truly cool dude -- and we are all so glad he's back in the fold.

Happy Monday,

I completely agree. I never much liked Asteroid but when they played it in Brussels with Paul it gave me goose pimples (bumps to you yanks!). He is fantastic, an integral element of the Joke, in my opinion, and a true gentleman, to boot.

IMHO, Big Paul is, was and ever will be the best Killing Joke drummer -- and one of the best drummers, period.
(But I confess I have a very strong Big Paul bias!) ; )

I will I take you on your word on that one Antoni. I am sure Big Paul is such a great change for the band. :)

I know were you're coming from (and I have felt similarly on previous tours)
BUT Asteroid really works well with Paul Ferguson on drums ... it's got a
different groove now, it'a an amazing transformation ... funny really, the
local listings had Killing Joke down as various different genres for the
weekend ("veteran art rock"
and ridiculously "80's goth rockers" amongst them) whilst the London LITE
also had a large piece on Brazilian band CSS who were playing the Shepherds
Bush Empire on Friday night - disco punk, it called them ... oh yeah ? To my
knowledge, there was only one "disco punk" band playing in London at the
weekend !!!

I personally think that song sucks! It is all ovef the place, and you are
right there are stronger songs on the KJ 2003 album and sound much better.

I am actually quite surprised they always seem to play Asteroid from
KJ2003. Blood on Your Hands and Seeing Red are such stronger songs
off that album. Just my $.02 (worth only about $.0075 cents now...)
