If I had to label SG, based on teh little I've heard of them, I'd say TIRED rehash of super-commercial 70s/80s metal...

Agreed, labels aren’t totally worthless but they aren’t profound metaphors to any large extent, or the experience of the things they describe. And good bands transcend labels.

Except AC / DC ;)

Yeah I remember one of the members of SG saying that Johnny told them Soundgarden were the reason the Ramones got back together or something, but it ain’t bragging if it’s true. If you want I can try to find that reference…the Ramones link was something I only found out very recently, so it’s not something I think they really promoted hard out or anything…I’m personally not that into the Ramones. But SG to me were always rock, you could call some of it prog rock I’m sure (Head Down etc). Punk, metal, they are just offshoots of rock really innit?

You might be more into Hater or Wellwater Conspiracy, Soundgarden side projects. Both pretty different to Soundgarden, Hater has elements of garage, surfer music, 50s rock, all sorts, quite a crack up at times.

Hater, Ben Shepherd singing:

The last track on that album is called Sad McBain, it’s a take the piss out of McBain, quite a laugh J

I guess I thought they claimed to be punk b/c they alsways take photos w/ the Ramones, etc. As for punk JUXTAPOSED w/bluegrass--that i love. My goal when I retire from teaching is to start a band that does just that--sort of like Jason and the Scorchers w/a banjo. BTW, Tommy Ramone currently plays in a straight-ahead bluegrass group, and says in interviews he likes both types of music.

Well, when you're not filtering your creativity through prejudices, there's absolutely no reason

why ANYTHING can't be done, let alone mixing punk & bluegrass, or whatever. That's how Punk

came abput in the first place, surely? Oh, sorry, I forgot free expression is a crime in the Punk Bible.

Not at first, but the 'fans' soon changed that ;)

When did they claim to be the new punk…I think you’ve got your lines crossed on that one. This is one of their few forays into the punk ethic:

Ben Shepherd who wrote the above song, the bassist, was more into the punk side of things. He defended mixing hillbilly and punk on this track as a completely natural thing to do because of the energy of the music, nothing to do with genres at all. Most of the comments I’ve read from them mention staying away from being pigeon holed into any genre at all. If you want I can forward you a link to a site with dozens of articles and intereviews from their whole career, a bit of an irrational domain, but with more (all lyrics, tab, articles, discography etc etc…quite an amazing site).

To me they share with Killing Joke a certain darkness and intensity, their lyrics both deal with personal demons, politics, philosophy etc.

I can see how some people would find Cornell a bit screamy, esp early on.

I despise Soundgarden (esp. the Led Zep/JudASS Priest vocals), but i listened to that song "Nothing to Say" or whatever that was just posted, and I did hear a rather Geordie-esque guitar part...I guess that's why the site the Joke as an influence (don't they?). I still don't get why they always claimed to b the new punk though...
