"UEFA, the people running Euro 2008, entered the theater of the absurd this week. In trying to excuse an error of judgment by the Swedish referee Peter Frojdfeldt, who allowed the Netherlands' first goal against Italy to stand Monday, the administrators said that the media and the public were ignorant of the laws of the game.
Ruud van Nistelrooy appeared yards offside when he kicked the ball into the net. UEFA now claims that the Italian defender Christian Panucci played van Nistelrooy onside, even though Panucci lay wounded outside the playing area.
Officialdom cites Article ll of soccer's rule book, which deems an injured player to be "active," on the pitch or not. What utter nonsense. Panucci was prone and hurt, active as a turtle washed up on the shore, as I described him. It is farcical that this goal could stand, given that Panucci had been in no position to defend anything."
