[kj] OT: AVI audio problems...

Can any of you techies explain to me why I can happily work with AVI
files which have MPEG Layer-3 audio encoding, but can't do anything with
AVI files that don't have it?  Adobe Premiere won't open such AVI files
at all and Cyberlink PowerProducer will give me the picture but not the
audio.
 
Any way of converting the audio in AVIs?  I'm going google-eyed,
Googling this.
