I think if people kept "chat" to a chat-room or IRC channel, and kept
obviously personal messages to personal email then the problem might go
somewhere to being solved.

I've pointed this out in the past but some mailing lists have infrequent
"guidelines" posted to remind folks. Contaning stuff alone the lines of
"keep quoting to a minimum", "change the subject when you change the topic",
"take personal business offlist", "learn to fucking type" etc.

I also think a lot of problems are caused by people using shitty email
software that doesn't thread properly. I always recommend Thunderbird, but
I've been using Gmail while I'm away from home and it's very impressive.

Hotmail is shite. If people didn't use Hotmail there would be a lot less
problems in the world. It encourages bad habits and doesn't thread emails.

Some people here also need to ask themselves "Do I really need to respond to
EVERY email? Especially when I have absolutely nothing to add?".
