i simply got a dvd recorder, scart connected to VHS player and i
copied over. When the process is finished i can still  use dvd
recorder like i used the video player. Get one with two scarts if you
want to tape off freeview feed as well as telly.
if you buy dvd/vid combo then 1/2 of it is useless when you have
completed the task, in the same way the usb turntable would be.
