I hear that TC Electronic have got close to the "strangled mallard" tone so beloved of anyone who used to own a Kay Les Paul copy. 
 
I took the humbucker cover off of one of those once and discovered that it was actually a single coil in a big cover! (which would explain why they were so microphonic!)

When I think back to some of my earlier guitars I am amazed I stuck with learning . . . 
 
The quality of cheap guitars these days is really rather good in comparison, I think someone must've realised not all learners want a guitar with an action you can park a bus under and the sound of an asthmatic owl
