Maybe in England it has those connotations, but, for example, a few 
months ago I think I said Melinda was "sweet' on list, and I didn't mean 
fuckwit, or stupid, or anything else derogatory. I said she was sweet, 
meaning "very kind," "genuine," "good hearted," and other stuff. This 
was when a couple of people on list were being jerks -- forget about 
what, exactly, probably Bernard Manning or something -- and Melinda was 
being nice.
