[kj] the essence [Tool]

Yeah, even Aenima really let me down at the time, though I wasn't really able to admit it to myself cuz I was still a HUGE fan at that point. So I suffered through the likes of Push It and H and Eulogy before seeing the light some years later. By the time Lateralus came around, I was more than ready to admit that they had become worthless. What really grabbed me though was the first A Perfect Circle album. It seemed like the Tool antidote. It was like they picked up where Undertow left off. Then they release their 2nd album and it sounds EXACTLY LIKE TOOL, complete with rambling, proggy arrangements. A dude just can't win sometimes. But, like I said, 10 000 Days has some decent moments throughout. Either way, the very best that Tool has to offer only really rates a C+ with me. So their becoming a shitty band really isn't any great loss. You can do so much better than Tool.

Ha, Leigh, it's like you've channeled my Tool experience exactly. Opiate and Undertow so great -- and then what? Only moments. Rehashed songs, made longer. I couldn't figure it out: they seemed to get more and more popular while I appreciated them less and less. I occasionally reached with hope for post-Undertow LPs, like some Outside the Gate replay, thinking "maybe I'll like it more this time." But it never happens. I hate that frustrating feeling of really wanting music to sound better than it is.

Then again, I enjoy Hosannas to this day...

My problem with Tool isn't really their song titles or their cover art or even their lyrics. It's more to do with the fact that every single song sounds like a rehash of the last one. A 10 minute rehash, at that.

Danny from Tool seems to be really approachable and friendly and down to
earth, good sense of humour, he's also mega into the whole Renne le Chateaux
hoax for some reason, and the occult in general. And an absolutely superb
drummer. The rest of them I'm not sure, but you need to bear in mind a lot
of what they do is tongue in cheek...half of their song names and lyrics are
veiled references to anal fisting etc :)

My little brother incurred Maynard's wrath when he yelled out at him to
"PLAY SOME CREED" as a joke between songs...but I don't think he heard him
properly.

Opiate and Undertow are brilliant, Hush is a quintessential rock track, I
was actually gonna mention it as my anthem, if I had to choose one properly
it would be that. Short, sarcastic, makes a statement, anti-establishment,
antagonistic, explicit lyrics, all boxes ticked =)

I'll stick up for Queen anyday. I'm not too familiar with the album Jazz but
I know that Mustapha and Don't Stop Me Now are both on there so it surely
can't be ALL bad. Also gotta give it up for the rockers like Now I'm Here
and Keep Yourself Alive as well as the more poppy, schlocky fair like I Want
To Break Free and Radio Ga Ga.

King Crimson really came out with some amazing stuff in the 80s. The 70s
stuff is ok, here and there. Same with the 90s and beyond. But the 3
Belew-era albums from the 80s are really awesome.

Tool are completely up their own asses and have resided there for years.
Opiate and Undertow are both great. It's all downhill from there. Lateralus,
in particular, is such a shitty album. 10 000 Days has some decent moments.

Well, I'm not going to get all red in the face attempting to defend
Queen here. Much like their US counterparts in Kiss, I heard them
before I ever layed ears on anything even remotely punk. Queen were
DELIBERATE in their pomp-rock ridiculousness, but at least they
didn't take themselves so dreadfully seriously (i.e. those gents in
E.L.P, Yes, etc.) And, they made some absolutely fantastic music
along the way. Sure, "Bicycle Race" is vaudevillian nonsense, but
listen to "Sheer Heart Attack," "The Prophet's Song," "Fight From The
Inside," "Stone Cold Crazy" -- they wrote some great stuff.

No matter what, they're far better than Bob fucking Dylan.

Jazz? Honestly?

Queen, to me, epitomise the sort of pomp-rock nonsense I hate. I
acknowledge
there's a lot of personal animus, but everything from Brian May's
Restoration wig and stadium stance, through Mr Bulsara's pre-Borat
leotards,
including Roger Taylor's mad ferret impersonation throughout the
Bohemian
Rhapsody video and Deacon's OMD Brussel sprout hair repels me.

When I was at school, there was a room you could book that contained a
shitty little record player. You got twenty minutes, booked a week in
advance, to play your 45s (wouldn't play at 33 1/3 at all, which
meant that
some of my eps were not viable) to your friends. I always seemed to
end up
waiting outside while some greasy fucker played Bicycle Race on
repeat. I
remember finally kicking the door in, tearing the record off the
deck and
smashing it to pieces against the wall. Gave him the cash to buy
another
single (think he followed my recommendation and bought "No More
Heroes"),
but it was enormously satisfying.

Everything Queen did up through THE GAME was brilliant.
