We have plenty fukwits over here, so the level of idiocy is sadly not very
exclusive - your verage chav wouldn't have a 4kin clue where Iran is, let
alone spell it. Certainly 'round these parts anyway. I've think I've learnt
more about geography since 9/11 than I paid attention to at school!
Actually, since I tipped into my 30's, I've been like sponge, which is
encouraging! Is it a 30's thing?

As an American, yeah, that's pretty disturbing. Obviously they probably
edited out folks who got the answers right -- I mean, *someone* had to
have, right? -- and did some other editing gimmicks. But still, for the
folks who got the questions wrong -- no excuse. Honestly, when I thought
of a country that starts with a "U," nerd that I am, I thought of
Uruguay and Uzbekhistan. I think a lot of Americans think of "United
States of America" as just plain "America" and "United Kingdom" as
"England," for better worse. And probably none of the people remember
that two continents are actually the Americas, named after an Italian,
Amerigo Vespucci. But most Americans don't really care, aren't
interested in, the rest of the world, because they know their country is
better than all of it anyway.
In school they tried to teach us geography. As a youngster, though, I
was interested in World War 2 quite a bit, studied all the maps and
books, played Risk and other war-oriented boardgames or computer
simulations a lot, and that more than anything taught me geography
pretty early on. Why, thanks to Risk I can still point out where regions
like Siam and The Congo are.
