[kj] OT : Depp/Vanian redux

Read an interview with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton in this week's NEW  
YORK Magazine and instantly thought of our Oliver. No props to poor  
Dave Vanian, but...

NEW YORK: Johnny, you've called this your 'punk Sweeney'

DEPP: If there was anyone in terms of inspiration for my sound, it was  
Anthony Newley [Broadway vet]. And Iggy Pop, y'know? Iggy's kind of  
this very aggressive crooner. Especially in the early stuff, there's  
something about his attack that's haunting.


Not much, but they only gave the interview half a page. I'm sure Depp  
has more to say on the subject. Moreover, "Anything" by the Damned  
(back when Vanian was still sporting that hairstyle) is a direct re- 
write of Iggy's "Five Foot One," so it all comes around.
