I quite agree.
Like everything there's good & bad.
& sometimes even the very bad churn out something rather good :)

My 2 euros worth:
As mentioned lot of the old school stuff such as NWA, Run DMC, LL Cool J &
also The Last Poets (who Geordie rates)
Might I also add The Roots, esp The Seed.
The Goats - check out Wake & Bake or Philly Blunts
The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy (& Michael Franti in general) very
clever, extremely well written & thought provoking
'Television - The Drug of the Nation' remains to my mind one of the greatest
songs ever written & if you've never heard it you should. So there.
Also Franti & Spearheads "Gas Gauge", again really intelligent
writing/storytelling.
Jay-Z's Black Album is great. Although the rest of his stuff certainly
isn't.
Black Eyed Peas can also have their moments.
On the other side of the coin I also love the sloppy half arsed rap of the
Chili Peppers - notably the earlier stuff.
Also quite like French rap, probably because I have no idea what's being
said!
