This is probably the worst response I could give but here it goes:

Jaz sounds silly when he curses.

That's pretty much it.

I'm not sure I get the popular objection to "Fight by day, f*ck by night." I mean, admittedly, at first listen I cringed too and thought, "well that's a bit obvious and weak." But on the other hand it's not like it is in anyway inconsistent with this band's lyrical history or one of most returned-to common themes. Primitive man, "we go to the basic feeling...to the basic man..." All this leads quite logically to a phrase that sums up man as a fighting and copulating little bastard.

>From a band whose previous, sparsely worded songs included constructions like "Follow the feeling wherever it goes, the primitive way, the primitive day," the "Walking With Gods" opener doesn't make me cringe anymore. It makes perfect thematic sense.

Well, I know I've read many reviews of Hosannas and some of the criticisms leveled against it. Some I believe are valid, but I can't imagine OTG as better than Hosannas. If nothing else Hosannas is another commitment to the energy and vitality of Killing Joke. As odd as it may sound when I hear the first line of "Lift up your spirits," my spirits actually do rise. Granted their are songs like
And on the opposite side of the fench, with Jaz singing in a cookie monster voice: "Flight by Day, Fuck by Night" makes me cringe and shake my head in disbelief. Actually, some of the lyrics on Hosannas seemed to be inspired by Jaz's love of Blue Oyster Cults' "Fire of Unknown Origin" album!

Walking with the Gods and Judas goat which don't do it for me, but I haven't had a Killing Joke album that I've enjoyed from start to finish since Extremities and since Night Time before that.
KJ is past the glory years, never coming out w/ anything thats gonna rule like Extremeties or Nighttime again. (pains me to say that).

I can't say the say for the opening lines of OTG "You better listen to me!" My love of this land and stay one jump ahead have good guitar parts, but beyond that I can't really see the virtue in OTG.

OTG one of the most horrific experiments gone awry. Jaz trying to make a pop album that the yuppie masses would consume w/ overwrought lyrics pointing out hazzards of greed.

I can put OTG on the record player and laugh, point out some decent parts, rock out to obsession, contemplate how "outside the gate" is actually a cool sounding title, and laugh some more. I actually can listen to the full album.

Hossanas is a sheet of gray to me. Majority of songs I have no feelings toward. I cannot sit thru Invocation, Light Bringer, Title Track, Gratitude. I love Exorcism from Pandemonium, so its just not the length of the song.

I do not feel the KJ spirit on Hosannas.

Will

At least OTG had fully fleshed-out SONGS (however dubiously executed) on it, and not just glorified jam sessions.

Im watching the vid for America. Laughing myself silly. Geordie looks like he's hanging out w/ Crockett and Tubbs. Bass Player is getting FUN- KAY!!!

I guess this was the last gasp of Jaz predicting Nuclear doom. Maybe one of the Pandemonium vids had some nuclear jams in it, cant recall.

Still, as bad as that album was its still better than Hosannas!
