this doesn't surprise me. one of the reasons i got into the Joke (apart from
liking them) was that no one encouraged me to and most people at the time
hated them. well, they were wrong and we were right.

There was a social science experiment done a year or so ago that asked:
What makes a song a hit? Not surprisingly, the study found that the peer
pressure factor was a big component -- namely, folks want to listen to
what they perceive everyone else is listening to, whether it's "good"
(subjective) or not.
