Hi Greg,

Civil rights apply to everyone, don't they? Or do you think it's a mistake to allow the middle class to vote? Dictatorship of the proletariat and all that... The civil rights movement was certainly quite left wing, but there's no way they could or should have said "oh, you might become a doctor (and move out of the poor neighbourhood), so we won't help you".

I agree that the poor (black, white, etc) in America have a very rough deal these days - but I think that's for other reasons than the fact that the middle class now includes a few people who previously would have been mowing your lawn.

Cheers,
Jamie

>Well, I think the main problem w/the civil rights movement was that it helped some of the black middle class. Many just became part of the "sysetm"--school and city administrators, cops, managers & businesspeople, etc. The black working class is in many ways worse off than they were during segregation (when black communities had their own doctors, teachers, lawyers, etc): higher prison rate than ever, bad schools, health care, and housing, more crime and drugs, etc. It's similar in a way to what has happened in South Africa since Apartheid ended--people still struggle for decent housing, electricity, etc.
