[kj] Killing Joke's genre

Yeah, I agree. And the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. For
me, thinking back to when they first came along, I think it was that
synthesis of lots of different styles, but I think mainly it was that
driving, rolling energy -. bit like a repressed rage that is sort of
bubbling along under the surface and exploding. Dark, but really
uplifting and energizing too. They just blew me away the first time I
saw them. I found them so exciting. And the tension created by
difference between the individual members. I am trying to explain, but
partly it was just a gut physical reaction that is beyond words.

And it was so different to anything that had come before.

Nicely put sir. Don't forget to put a bit of reggae in the mix though ;]

We're forgetting that the Joke were the first, or one of the first, to
come up w/ a new style and sound (a lot like the Ramones in punk, or
Gang of 4 in post-punk, or Dizzy Gillespie in jazz, or Bo Diddley in
rock, or Bill Monroe in folk, etc. etc.). They combined punk, new wave,
metal, industrial/goth, funk, and electronic music into a new sound that
no one had at the time, and that millions of bands have been influenced
by since. That's one reason (aside from being a good band) that they
deserve a place in rock history.
