I have found that whammy pedals can add an unwanted artificial sound to
guitar . . haven't tried one on bass but I assume it would be the same?

Rob's suggestion of dropping down to D (or even B) is probably the better
idea. 

Or . . 

Run the signal from your bass through a splitter box, take one output
through an octaver run the other clean into two separate amps (or a mixer
and one amp) and blend it to retain some clarity . . . if you have a PC that
can handle it this is easy to do with Native Instruments Guitar Rig.
