I take your point Alex, but if you'd told JJ that they weren't punk back in 77 he'd have beaten you up, along with Paul Simonon of the Clash!

However, one of the great things about punk then was that it was such an eclectic mix - and so encompassed such varied talents as the Stranglers, the Pistols, the Clash, the Buzzcocks, the Damned... so personally, I reckon that the Stranglers *were* punk.
