In case there are some here who are interested in the long term view  - and I 
can attest one member of Killing Joke has this book, may I recommend the 
following?

The European Dream - by Jeremy Rifkin.

I've not started it yet, but it promises to be an enlightening read as all 
his works are.

Perhaps a discussion can ensue in a few weeks after we've all had a chance to 
digest it?
