I see a difference:

1 making a piece of music and someone buying it in order to use it as
part of their promotion

2 actually being part of the promotion so that you are trying to
identify with the product

is there a difference?

For me yes. In this case U2 are making a statement that they are the
product are intrinsically linked as one. The iPod has been revolutionary
and U2 are jumping on it for street credibility and iPod are happy to
use that to capture that market. My sons mates are queuing up to get
their mini ipods filled with tunes as their parents have given them
without understanding whats involved

Many have refused to be associated with sky.

"iPod commercial??"

Let's not forget that KJ sold some of their songs to the same
channel(Sky
Sports)I ve heard "Whiteout" and one from the last album. The only
difference
is that U2 got a load of money and the advertising was high -profile,KJ
only got a pittance and the adverts were low-profile.
But in the terms of selling themselves ,There was no difference.Just
the
amount of money they received was different
