JAZ COLEMAN'S RESPONSE TO NEWS OF PEEL'S DEATH

The day after news of John Peel's death was broadcast on the BBC, Jaz spoke
to me about the importance of John Peel in the Killing Joke story. There was
NO indication from Jaz whatsoever that he had even a hint of ill feelings
toward Peel.

I said: "Jaz, did you hear the bad news." I didn't mention whether I was
talking about the latest shit in Iraq or any other number of "bad" world
news stories that day. Jaz immediately responded: "John Peel is dead." Later
that same night, Jaz told me about the rapid rise to success by Killing Joke
circa 1980. Jaz said: "None of it would have happened, really, without John
Peel. That's the truth."

This was not diplomatic language in a quote to a journalist. Jaz was
genuinely sad.
