I agree on a lot said already- my ‘benefit of the doubt’ possible interpretation,( given his hunting story and the song title) is that even with context of doing it for sustenance and having reverence, there can still be an element of thrill, excitement and ‘pleasure’ in it- and that he could just have just been over emphasizing that element of it for the songs sake, and yes it was clunky 

I didn’t take it that he was into ‘big game’/trophy hunting or something like that...
