I guess my favourite Raven moment was at and after the Godflesh gig in London December 2001. We (a few Gatherers from this list) hung out with him and Jaz backstage and had a great laugh. I think we then went for a late dinner to Garlic & Shots, Rob showed us his arse and Raven spent the night on my sofa as the band's hotel was too far outside town, apparently.

 Ah The Raven..  I got to meet and chat briefly with him once.  During the 2003 album tour, Alex in NYC introduced me to Todd Wulfmeyer (where’s he at these days?) who drove me to the shows in DC and Baltimore. In Baltimore we got a tip that the band was hanging out in the bar below the venue so we raced over. We arrived to an almost empty bar but, right on cue, in stroll Geordie and our man Raven.  I asked Raven if I could buy him a round and he said “.....ahhhh what day is it?”  Apparently they’d been trying a one day drinking, one day drying out policy on that tour..  Finally he said “Yeah, I’ll take a Jack.” I, stupidly, said “..Jack?” At which point his demeanor changed, his eyes got small and glared into mine and he barked “DANIEL’S!!!”  which got a huge laugh, at which point his eyes turned back into twinkling stars. Hahaaaa!  I got the Killing and the Joke.  Then we chatted for a bit and he was totally open and cool.

Some will have heard this before but this story sums the man up for me. After being invited at short notice to Prague for a weekend by Jaz and Geordie he basically rescued me from a night of homelessness and took me under his wing (pardon the pun) after Geordie, who was meant to put me up was, shall we say,  distracted by the fairer sex. After a bar crawl with Raven, Reza and others I ended up back at Raven's flat where he enthusiastically played me demos from Hosannas on his laptop - I was pinching myself- and I crashed on a sofa at the end of his bed, listening to him gently snoring after we'd said Waltons-like goodnights. All very surreal. I recall waking up to the sound of an opera singer practicing in the apartment above (Raven loved that) and going to his spacious bathroom where various porn mags were neatly laid out on the floor! He looked after me the whole of that day too, showing me his haunts and taking me to lunch at one of his favourite little hangouts before we headed t
 o Faust studios to meet the rest of the band. One of the most memorable weekends of my life and I still have the Cohiba Double Corona cigar he bought me.
