I agree with this assessment 100%. I was a huge Jane's fan, saw them half a
dozen times from '88 (including a club show at The Scream) to Lollapalooza
'91 and they were just incredible live back then. Even when they did their
first reunion with Flea on Bass in '97, it was mind-blowing. Since then,
I've seen them at least another half dozen times with every bass player
they've had in the band (Flea, LeNoble, Duff, Chaney and Avery again) and
especially the last few years since Eric left again, it's been pretty by the
numbers at best and sometimes embarrassing to watch at worse. If you've
never seen them and it's not expensive, go with lowered expectations, they
are worth a one time show, but the glory days of '86 - '91 are long gone:

Almost all of their fans hate what they've become, which is an oldies band
doing tired alterna-rock cabaret plugging their very small original classic
catalog and maybe one or two songs from the 2 mediocre post Y2K albums. The
real weak link is Perry Farrell who mostly talks or whispers lyrics now and
has devolved into the most shallow frontman on the planet integrating his
even more vapid obnoxious wife into the band as an exotic dancer. This live
clip pretty much sums up current JA:

For those that have a few hours to kill, here is a multi-part interview with
original bass player Eric Avery after he left the band again in 2010-ish who
talks candidly with the webmaster of a Jane's fansite. This interview
*really* pissed off the rest of the band and influenced Perry's song "End To
The Lies" off the last album.

They were once an amazing band. And all 4 musicians brought a unique trait
to the music. Now it's ego and money driving it.
Stephen Perkins is still an amazing drummer but is way to much of a yes man
and lives in the shadows of Dave and Perry.
Perry has become the atypical uber Hollywood artist freak. But is artist
side has been phoning it in for way to long. And his freakiness is less
freaky and more suburban.
Dave is a great guitarist and if he would shut up and stop posing he'd be
better off.
Eric may sound the most rational but seems like he is way to damaged to
coexist with. And hasn't been in the band for some time.

They were never really "anti-Hollywood" but they have become sooooooo
Hollywood that's it's unbearable. I still listen to the records and that's
as far as I can go anymore.

Tragedy of themselves

Chris
