[kj] Roundhouse

Had a great night out, good to see those I did see - Mr Tibbits and I
parked out ourselves out back at the Monarch,
got to say hi to Colesy, Frank Jenkinson of KJ Photo Book fame, in fact I
think there was quite a class of 1979
mini-gathering going on there at one point, and had an amusing walk from
pub to venue in the company of
Laughing Chris - Jamie sorry I didn't find you, pints next time... and
Antoni at the end.

So, full disclosure, Pylon doesn't do it for me. I don't like it. Probably
haven't been left this cold by a
KJ release since Democracy. I like four songs - Euphoria, New Jerusalem,
Big Buzz and Delete - but none
of them were played.
Having said that, the energy level was immense - some of the new stuff
works live in terms of sheer power,
the band are fully fired up and I haven't seen them this committed for some
years. Those of you waiting in the US,
I think (hope) you are in for a treat.
As for the sound... I've long since given up expecting a good sound at a KJ
show, anything more is a bonus.
I took a friend who's heard me going on about KJ for many years, this was
her first gig, and for
the first half she was looking at me with a 'what the fuck?' expression. We
were up in the balcony
and the sound was horrible, about 70% big booming drums and 30% thrashy
mess, although Jaz's vocals
were clear. Then with Requiem someone presumably remembered to press a
button - everything cleared up,
and the sound was great. After 36 years, I've given up wondering why they
can't get their fecking live sound
sorted.
As for the oldies, it's just personal isn't it? I hate Eighties and never
want to hear it again, but Wardance was
a sight and sound to behold, likewise Change, LLB and Pandemonium. The
performance of Pssyche was
stunning (even though they managed to screw up the sound level for BP's
last verse). I came away as usual
believing that this is the greatest song ever written. It more than made up
for having to sit through Asteroid.

And my enjoyment of Turn To Red was in no way spoiled by Jaz banging on
about bloody chemtrails in the intro ;-)
