[kj] 30 years of NIGHT TIME

I was desperate to like America & OTG when they came out - it was my beloved Joke, who could do no wrong - but no matter how hard I tried...

So when I saw them on those two gigs in May 89 (Manchester & London), I was mightily relieved. And Extremities and the associated tour did indeed feel like a return to form.

But with hindsight I'm less convinced. Killing Joke in 84/85/86 seemed to be on an amazing path that combined "strength and beauty", and actually from Extremities onwards, that magical combination seems to have faded away. Not entirely - there's been the occasional track since - but there's been too much growling from Jaz, too much chugging from Geordie, not enough of the funky dance ethic, not enough of the guitar that sounds like "a thousand orchestras playing at once", not enough of Big Paul as the instinctive drumming powerhouse & (I suspect) the ideological & intellectual powerhouse behind the band, too much of "what I did in my holidays by Jeremy aged 9"...

So maybe it was "strength and beauty destined to decay".

Jamie

Damn fine fellow? Yeah, musta been me! Oh, blue t-shirt... nope, not me! I'm terrible with names, but have met a fair chunk of the reprobates on this list over the years.

Actually it might be interesting to hear those songs done live now, but at the time it was so weak, particularly compared to the previous year (and even more so next to the Extremities tour... what a joyous return that was).

As has also been stated, it's true- DEVO can safely use a headless bass, but I think that's about it. JJ Burnel... urgh!

I'm not sure if I've met Dave in Edinburgh, but if he was at the the second Forum Gig wearing a blue Revelations shirt he was a very fine fellow!

On the BTATS tour I missed it all(too young!!!!!) but from what I've seen-Wow-wish I'd seen it-For The Love Of The Masses/Rubicon/SGD/DBD all on the same night, - I would have come in my pants so probably just as well!

I remember seeing AC/DC on the FLICK OF THE SWITCH tour, and Cliff the bass player was playing a headless bass ... Not that anyone was really watching him

Anyway, but yeah ... Ridiculous things.

The BTATS tour is still by far the worst time I've seen Killing Joke... horrible. I blame it on the 80's. Fucking horrible sounding albums abounded around then, and people thought playing headless basses was a really good idea!

Each to their own though! (apart from headless basses)

They were certainly on blinding form for that tour.

Sanity is one of my all-time favourite KJ tracks.

… they’re also a bit cripser. For instance, in Rubicon there’s a gorgeous guitar climb in the choruses before the ‘we cross the Rubicon’ line I’d never heard in any detail.

BTATS, it’s one of my faves. It has a great vibe to it and seemed a natural follow on from to Night Time plus it was on that tour I first saw them live.

there's different BTATS mixes on the 2007 re release eg For The Love Of The Masses has an extra verse on the end
