[kj] music wanker poll

David Thomas is the reason I never, ever meet my musical heroes anymore. Ever. I am speaking from personal experience.

The original Pere Ubu was essentially done by 1981 and what followed was, much like Mark E Smith and the Fall, simply David Thomas touring as Pere Ubu with whomever could tolerate him for a few months at a time. The early singles and first 3-4 albums are remarkable, though. Personal faves are "Modern Dance" and"Dub Housing;" check out YouTube for their performance of "Birdies" from "URGH! A Music War":

Was he mean mean, funny mean, or PEOPLE AREN'T SUPPOSED TO TOUCH ME!!!! mean? Actually that last one isn't technically mean, more 'doesn't interact well with the other kids'... I really like that song Breathe. Reminds me of the 70s, when you could turn on the telly and chances were much higher than today that you’d tune in to a Real Musician®, singing Real Music®. The Simon Cowells of the world had the decency to stay in their money vaults. And it didn't really matter if you looked like, well, David Thomas (or Meatloaf, Streisand, early Freddy Mercury...) I was turned on to Pere Ubu by Kim Thayil from Soundgarden. Kim is a bona-fide musical encyclopaedia, and has an eye for the obscure and esoteric (card-carrying member of the Church of the Subgenius of course). For example, Soundgarden's wedding song—at least to fans—is called Slaves and Bulldozers (ooh see what I did there?). At school one of Kim's classmates was a 6-year old American Indian kid who 'didn't interact well with other kids' - he created his own game called 'Slaves & Bulldozers' and played it on his own. I may have fucked up most of that story. Also, experience has taught me that it buzzes me out a lot more than it does anyone else. But I kinda love weird shit like that, and I always find those kind of people fascinating. (Until they sick up on your back). -----Original Message-----
