It's been discussed here before but the original reference is from the Bhagavad Gita and was quoted by J. Robert Oppenheimer during the Trinity nuclear tests in 1945.

The full text is actually this:

"Brighter than a thousand suns
I am become death, destroyer of worlds"

Oppenheimer allegedly had to be reminded of the second line after stating the first.

It is also an Iron Maiden song.

Anatoli Petrovich Bugorski (Russian: Анатолий Бугорский; 1942 – ) is a Russian scientist who was involved in an accident with a particle accelerator in 1978.[1]
Particle accelerator accidentAs a researcher at the Institute for High Energy Physics in Protvino, Bugorski used to work with the largest Soviet particle accelerator, the U-70 synchrotron.[2] On 13 July 1978, Bugorski was checking a malfunctioning piece of equipment when an accident occurred due to failed safety mechanisms. Bugorski was leaning over the piece of equipment when he stuck his head in the path of the proton beam. Reportedly, he saw a flash "brighter than a thousand suns," but did not feel any pain.[1]
